Breakthrough for Retiring Horses Used for Racing

Great news following a very extensive single-issue campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Always refreshing to hear news of progress from people who do the most for animals, as opposed to Francionists who mostly just complain and seek for ways to sabotage progressive animal politics.

Here it is in PETA's own words:

=============================

Less than a year after PETA sent the Jockey Club a detailed plan for a thoroughbred retirement program, the racing industry has taken the first serious step toward doing exactly what we asked.

The Jockey Club announced today the launch of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), funded initially by the Jockey Club, the Breeders' Cup, Ltd., and the Keeneland Association and comprised of owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, jockeys, horse rescue experts, and other stakeholders in the racing industry. The TAA will start, as we recommended, by inspecting and accrediting thoroughbred sanctuaries. The alliance will also begin raising funds from within the industry to get the horses into these sanctuaries.

There's still much work to be done, and the racing industry is still in need of reform. But the groundwork has been laid, and at long last, the racing industry is acknowledging that it must be responsible for the horses it uses—for their entire lives.

We will follow up to ensure this means that horses like Coming Home, the sweet thoroughbred mare we rescued when she was just hours away from being sent to slaughter, will have a chance at finding a real home instead of facing a terrifying death at a slaughterhouse.

The tens of thousands of e-mails sent by you and other PETA supporters were critical to this breakthrough! Racing folks heard you loud and clear, and they're taking action at last.

===================================

In the bad old days, they would just shoot horses who had "outlived their usefulness." Francionists who just advocate veganism and oppose single-issue campaigns such as this would have won NOTHING for these horses.

Bravo, PETA! Bravo for those horses!!!
