New Short Essay on Veganism for Earth Week

I co-authored this along with Jana Crawford, a doctoral student specializing in animal ethics at the University of Toronto. The short essay makes a case for veganism in connection with Earth Week, emphasizing the role of compassion in ethics. It is entitled, "The Ethical Case for the Vegan Challenge: Being Able to Look Big Tom Right in the Eye." It can be found on the Rabble.ca, alternative media website:

ESSAY

The essay was crafted for Toronto Pig Save, as part of its promoting the Vegan Challenge in various workplaces, including that of Rabble. This was following Oprah Winfrey's own Vegan Challenge in the last season of her talk show. We were very pleased with the result of our collaboration and hope you enjoy it too!

Northwest Animal Rights Network Adopts "Animal Rights Law"

My peer-reviewed journal article, "Animal Rights Law: Fundamentalism versus Pragmatism," Journal for Critical Animal Studies 5 (1) (2007): 1-35, has been adopted by NARN, a large, thriving, and vitally active animal rights group. In their About Us" segment of their website, we find:

Approach

Since our position is calling for both the end of the abuse and exploitation of animals, our approach is one of animal rights pragmatism*; we must always strive for what is best for sentient beings at all times. To allow the worst of abuses unchallenged while we work to secure the ultimate rights of animals puts the animals through needless suffering. Animal rights, while it is the goal we all wish for the animals, is merely a means to an end, not the end itself. The end is the sentient being. In fighting for the rights of animals, the animals themselves should be the primary focus in deciding what we can achieve now.

I am pleased that people are finding materials that I am generating to be helpful.
